MANNAM culture - Dano;Korean traditional holiday

Dano is a Korean traditional holiday that falls on today, May 5^th, by the lunar calendar.

Though Dano is no longer designated as national holiday, it used to be considered one of the four great festival days.

Shall we learn a little bit about it?

1. Where did Dano originally come from?

A long time ago, our ancestors had a festival in order to wish for a good harvest of the year after the planting season.

Besides, Dano is also called Surit nal(Surit Day). ‘Su’ and ‘rit’ literally mean ‘God’ and ‘high’ respectively. So, it can be considered the day the highest God comes.

2. How do we celebrate?

On Dano, Korean people enjoy playing on the swings and the seesaw. They wash their hair with water infused with sweet flags. By doing so, the ancestors believed some bad spirits around them would go away. In addition, men have ssireum(Korean wrestling) competition though its popularity has started to fade nowadays. Unfortunately, all these events and games are fading away and became traditional things.

3. What foods do we eat?

There are a kind of rice cake with some plants named surichui, fruit salad with cherries, and sweet flag wine that you can enjoy on this day. It is a special feature that all the foods are set up in preparation for hot summer days.

Not only Korean but Chinese and Japanese celebrate this day for their own holiday.

How interesting! Looks like we all belonged to the same nation long time ago. lol

You know, in MANNAM, there are many people from all over the world.

A lot of cultures we have.

Therefore, we share our culture and understand one another.

We all can be nice friends no matter where you came from, no matter what you have!!

Happiness is the perfume you can't

pour on other without getting a few

drops on yourself.

This quote has really touched me.

Happiness is like perfume. If you pour it a little bit in your room, the room will be filled with its fragrance. 

On the other hand, if you don't have the fragrance, it can never be wafted.

Think about the world peace relating to this.

I think it is the same as this.

Wishing for world peace is like perfume.

If you’ve got the will of it, it will be wafted to the world.

It will never be true when you don't wish for it.

"You can spread the positive thinking of peace to the world.

That will make the peaceful world."

MANNAM international Korean class: Diary(6/08/2013)

There was Korean class in Jeonju MANNAM.

This week, we’ve learn about “past form”.

The students from different countries were studying very hard.

They looked so serious asking me a lot of questions

and concentrated on my words to understand what I was saying.

It seemed to be really hard for them to pronounce Korean vowels.

But they kept trying to say perfectly.

I admire their courage.

Here is Super-beginners’ class.

These students have been studying from the basic of Korean.

After learning the basic, they will be able to read and say some sentences.

It will make them easier to stay here in Korea.

I wish they feel happy with knowing Korean language.

And that is my purpose of teaching in MANNAM.

MANNAM Peace - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urges ceasefire in Syria's Qusayr

UN Secretary General Bank-Ki-moon urged the two of the Syrian government and the militants to stop the war for the relief work of the wounded and civilians isolated in the fighting in Qusayr.

Mr.Ban said, "The Syrian government has a responsibility to protect the civilians in the area within a jurisdiction." and he demanded that the both sides, Syrian government forces and the militants let the trapped civilians and the wounded escape the town for the evacuation.

According to a statement, Mr.Ban stressed the both sides to do their utmost to avoid civilians casualties, and warned they would be held accountable for any acts of atrocity carried out against the civilian population of Qusayr.

UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos and UN human rights commissioner Navi Pillay said, “We understand there may also be as many as 1,500 wounded people in urgent need of immediate evacuation for emergency medical treatment, and that the general situation in al-Qusayr is desperate.”

They also said there were reports that civilian neighborhoods continued to be indiscriminately attacked and that other major violations of human rights and international humanitarian law were being committed.

Qusayr, as a strategic point, located on the route between the capital city, Damascus and the coast, which used to be taken by the militants, was recaptured by the Syrian government forces last month backed by the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah.

Rami Abdulrahman, of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights(SOHR), an information office reporting the Syrian civil war said, "The battle is continuing in the northern area of Qusayr. The Syrian government forces are increasing their military strength and the militants are mobilizing all what they have to fight against them as well.

MANNAM culture - Have you ever tried Patbingsu?

Have you ever tried Patbingsu(shaved ice with sweet red beans)?

There are a lot of delicious food in Korea. Above all, when it comes to summer, Patbingsu is the best dessert that you should try! Patbingsu is made with ice flakes, red beans, ddeok(rice cakes), occasionally milk, etc. You should try Patbingsu if you are going to spend this summer in Korea. It can be easily found in most of the cafes.

Now, I’d like to introduce some delicious Bingsus I've enjoyed.

This is Bingsu(shaved ice) with coffee from Caffebene. The taste is like coffee ice cream, but the plenty of nuts and chocolate chip make this Bingsu more delicious.

I really like its combination! :)

The next one is special Bingsu from cafe Noriter near Jeonbuk Univ. Look at the size of the bowl! This is for three or four people!

Not to mention its sweet taste with syrup, its decoration is fantastic, isn't it? You can enjoy the decoration of it as well as the taste.

  

The last one is Bingsu from a famous cafe in Hanok village in Jeonju named Oehalmeoni somssi(which means grandmother’s skill). It is made in the old ways just like the name of the cafe. This Binsu is very popular for savory taste by adding powder made of mixed grains. It’s just delicious! I think people miss the old style food these days as there are too many fusion food around them.

MANNAM Korean Class - Using verbs;"치다", "타다", "하다"

Hello, Mannamers!!

I'm going to post up about Korean today! :)

I think some verbs in Korean are much confusing for you to use.

That's becuase there are some differences between English and Korean in using verbs.

(Of course, they are different!!  lol)

I mean those are hard to be translated, so you just need to remember them.

Here are some examples which can help you to learn.

"치다" means "to hit", but you can use many cases such as,

*테니스를 치다(play tennis)

*탁구를 치다(play table tennis)

*피아노를 치다(play the piano)

*타자를 치다(type)

*박수를 치다(clap)

"타다" means "to ride", but you can use many cases such as,

*스케이트를 타다(skate)

*스키를 타다(ski)

*자전거를 타다(ride a bike)

*택시를 타다(take a taxi)

*미끄럼틀 타다(go down the slide)

"하다" means "to do", but you can use many cases such as,

*축구를 하다(play soccer)

*농구를 하다(play basketball)

*태권도를 하다 (do teakwando)

*요가를 하다(do yoga)

*운동을 하다(to work out)

International Youth Groups initiated World Peace movement in South Korea

Despite threats of war and warnings for foreigners to evacuate Seoul from North Korea, on the 21st of April 2013, about 2,000 young people gathered at Gwacheon's Seoul Grand Park to hold a truly meaningful event. The "10km Walk in their shoes" event has become an annual event for MANNAM Volunteer Association. Previously the event has been covered by international news groups from countries such as Turkey and Pakistan as the volunteers of MANNAM walked to raise awareness for topic relevant to situations their nations were experiencing. Today, however, the focus was the launch of the MANNAM International Youth Coalition (MIYC).

The event drew attention to the need for practical ways with which to achieve peace both within and between nations. The event was unique in that the volunteers in South Korea did not walk alone. 25 youth organizations from 17 other nations have all planned similar events to be held within the next week - all in the name of celebrating MIYC and making a statement for peace.

The event began with speeches from representatives of student youth organizations and the 'Pledge of Peace' in which all in attendance were asked to pledge their efforts to uniting the youth of the world under the banner of peace and restoration for the youth of the world. Following the opening, the day was filled with K-pop flash mobs, inspiring card-sections performances, and, of course, the walk itself. Besides the main program items, there were many meaningful side-programs to be experienced, and participants could be found writing messages of peace, leaving their mark on a section of a giant thumb-printed flag (a project to be unveiled later this year), or creating customized MIYC peace badges.

Tanner Gerschick, a US citizen said, “I participated the event because I thought it was very inspiring that many diverse young people gathered to let the world know about peace. I wish that the event can be known to as many people as possible.” One of a the event organizers mentioned, “when the youth of the world become one, the war will end and peace will become a reality. MIYC is planning to request that world leaders sign an international Memorandum of Understanding focusing on world peace and the cessation of war - especially because it is old men who dream up wars, and the youth who go out and die in them. If the youth, being set on a creating a world free of war, refuse to fight, then who will fight the wars?"

MANNAM Volunteer : Sports Day in Sundeok Orphanage

Sports Day in Sundeok Orphanage.

Annually, the kids have a fantastic Sports Day.

They wanted us to come and enjoy together this time.

How cute they are!!

This lovely couple from China attend this volunteer every time.

I admire their kindness,

and also envy them. lol

We did some fun games and laughted together.

Look at this boy!! He was really good at dancing.

His dream is a famous k-pop star.

I hope I can see him on TV some day. :)

It was a great day with beautiful sunshine and kids.

MANNAM International : Trash clean up campaign with foreigners in Bukchon Hanok village

"No frontier in doing something good"

The Gyeonggi bukbu branch of the International division of MANNAM Volunteer Association (hereafter referred to as Mannam International/ Branch Chief Jung Jaeyoung) hold the trash clean up campaign in Bukchon Hanok village, Jongno-gu on 28 April.

This event in tandem with Jongno-gu office was designed to promote awareness of the excellence of Korean traditional culture and the importance of the environmental preservation to mark 'Earth day'.

Especially, starting with walking around the eight famous spots in Bukchon from both Jungdok tourist information office and Jaedong tourist information office simultaneously, the Bukchon Hanok village tour of 'Street museum in the town center' finished experiencing the beautiful and historic street and alley of the Hanok village.

A volunteer, Ahmad (Saudi Arabia, 27) said, "It was very impressive that we were able to do volunteer work watching the beautiful street of Bukchon Hanok village. Moreover, I had a great time with Mannam people and I would like to participate in the volunteer work with them continuously."

The chief of the Gyeonggi bukbu branch said, "It was the heart moving day when we became one, beyond nationality and race, with foreign friends thru volunteer work and it also showed a good example to people. We plan to perform volunteer work to contribute to the society and to become the light of the world in a variety of ways.

Mannam Internationl has held various activities like sports with and Korean class for foreigners in Korea, and played a role of a nongovernmental peace delegator which transcends religion and race and achieves the true harmony.

MANNAM Peace : Happy Parents' Day!!

Happy Parents' Day!!

May 8th is Parents' Day in Korea.

In Korea, we usually get some carnations to present to our parents.

And we present some gifts and cards to each parent to show how much we love them.



Through this day, we could realize how precious things or people we have around us.

There are numerous things to appreciate, but we sometimes forget about them.

Like the air, water, and all the nature and people around you.

Those give you a life and make you happy without pay or reward.

How thankful they are!!

MANNAM Korean class: May 5, 2013

"Why is English so important to us?"

Sometimes my students ask the question to me.

Whenever I heard that question, I didn't know what was the proper answer. I just learned it because it was interesting to me.

So, I've thought why is learning foreign language so important.

Yesterday, I went to Korean Class in Wanju. A chinese student came to learn. Other students told me that he couldn't speak neither Korean nor English.

To make things worse, his company has no Chinese.

They've only communicated with body language everyday!!

Can you imagine how embarrassed they were?

That time, I realized that language is so valuable.

Through language, we share information, thoughts and express our feeling.

We can learn everything easy when we know the language.

Finally, I got the answer from this.

And I also realized that MANNAM has been doing really great job letting them know language to communicate one another.

Volunteering is not difficult.

Sharing something that we have.

Giving things without reward.

That is volunteering.

That is the reason why I'd like to volunteer with MANNAM.

MANNAM Korean class - An essay Ⅴ by a MANNAM Korean Class teacher

When I started the Korean class in the Wanju center last Sunday, I noticed two Nepaleses did not look fine, who seemed to have some problems. They said that they would be transferred to Cheonan for the work in the first week of May.

For seven months of the Korean class I have really become attached to all of the students in the Korean class. Therefore, I was so sorry to hear that they would leave for another place soon.

In addition, they expressed their wish to continue the Korean class through MANNAM even after moving to Cheonan. I was willing to introduce Mannam in Cheonan. In the Wanju Korean class through MANNAM, they have been one little light. Now, I hope they make an effort and achieve a victory so that they become the brighter one through another MANNAM in Cheonan.

MANNAM Jeounju - Jeondong Catholic Church

A weekend ago I went to Jeonju with a group of people from Church to see one of the most famous Catholic churches in South Korea.

That is Jeondong Catholic Church which is one of tourist attraction in Jeonju, city of traditional beauty and food.

Jeondong Catholic Church in Jeonju is located in the entrance of Jeonju Hanok Village(Traditional Korean House). Jeondong Catholic Church in Jeonju was built in honor of Roman Catholic martyrs of the Joseon Dynasty on the very same spot the martyrs lost their lives. The land was purchased by French Priest Baudenet in 1891, but construction of the church did not begin until 1908. The church was designed by Priest Poinel, who also designed the famous Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul. Construction was completed in 1914, a time during which Korea was under Japanese rule. Though originally built just outside of Pungnammun Gate, the site of the martyrs, the church was later moved to its current location for expansion.

The first Romanesque building in the Honam(the southwestern section of Korea) region, the Jeondong Catholic Church was made of gray and red bricks and bears a striking resemblance to the Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul. Not only considered one of the most beautiful Catholic churches in Korea, some even go so far as to say it is one of the most beautiful structures in all of Korea, citing the church’s unique combination of Byzantine and Romanesque architectural styles. The rectangular building is topped with three Byzantine bell towers (to the right, center, and left) and boasts arched ceilings, several of which meet in the form of a cross.

Jeonju MANNAM : Jeonju International Film Festival

I will introduce today concerning Jeonju International Film Festival which is celebrated 14th anniversary.

JIFF(Jeonju International Film Festival)has been arranged and hosted by JIFF Organizing Committee. JIFF, with its goal to lead ‘A Beautiful Change of the World through Cinema’ under the slogan of ‘Digital Alternative and Independence’ at its start in 2000, has always searched and introduced challenging and creative films which are distant from main stream films and made its position firm as one of the most recognized film festivals focusing on alternative and independent films in the world.

It gets underway on April 25 with its opening film 'Fox Fire', the new film from Laurent Canet, who was behind the 2008 Palme d'Or winner 'The Class' and will also serve as the president of this year's international jury. The opening film, an adaptation of 'Fox Fire': Confessions of a Girl Gang' by Joyce Carol Oates, is about young girls forming a gang.

JIFF will come to a close on May 3 with a screening of Haifaa Al Mansour's Wadjda, the first Saudi Arabian film to be directed by a woman. Wadjda has gained a lot of attention so far. It tells a story of a ten-year-old Saudi girl who dreams of having a green bicycle and overcomes social taboos to get the bike.

MIYC event: 10Km in their shoes

MIYC was formed with groups of young people. Last Sunday (April 21), MIYC hosted the event, '10Km in Their Shoes'. A lot of foreigners were invited and spent time together. The theme of this event was 'Pledge of Peace' and there also was a ceremony of MIYC.

To be honest, many people hardly think about peace in their normal life.

So this event provided people with a chance to think of the significance of peace and enabled them to imagine the world with no war.

MANNAM put on an eye-catching card section and performed with wonderful dancing to celebrate it.

After finishing walking, the participants were given the souvenirs made with their own fingerprints to celebrate their walking completion.

Plus, a figure adorned with the participants' fingerprints was built to add to the amusement. Then, there was a trip to the zoo where people had an enjoyable time.

On a peaceful day, it was a joyful and meaningful time for the pledge of peace mingling with foreigners.
